Kyoko Kusakabe is a Professor at Gender and Development Studies, Department of Development and Sustainability, School of Environment, Resources and Development, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, where she is also the Head of Department. She has a PhD in gender and development studies from Asian Institute of Technology. She has worked in semi-government organization in Japan and NGO in Cambodia prior to gaining her PhD degree. Her PhD thesis was on market vendors in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Since then, her research focused on gender issues in the Mekong region especially around gender and labor, e.g. gender and labor migration, women in fisheries and aquaculture, gender issues in cross border infrastructure development and investment. She has also been engaged in various development projects, and teaches gender analysis in the field, as well as gender mainstreaming in organizations and gender and enterprise development. She has authored books and many journal articles, among which is Thailand’s hidden workforce: Burmese migrant women factory workers (2012 with Ruth Pearson).
